How to: Toast Coconut

Toasting coconut, like like toasting nuts, brings out natural oils and creates amazing flavor and a fuller dimension. Plus, it just looks pretty 🙂 There are a few ways to do it. You can do it on the stove top in a pan, bake it in the oven, broil it in the oven, or even use the microwave! I usually pop it under the broiler for a few minutes, stirring literally every 10-15 seconds or so, but you have to be very careful as coconut burns in a split second. So that being said, I’d say the easiest way to toast coconut, and get the best results is to bake it in the oven. Follow these simple directions for perfectly toasted coconut every time!

1. Preheat oven to 375

2. Spread out coconut on a cookie sheet (or other oven safe dish)
If your coconut is unsweetened, you can toss with a little powdered sugar first.

3. Place in oven and cook for about 2-5 minutes depending on how much you’re doing.

4. Important!! Stir often, about every 30 seconds, especially when you see it start to brown. The coconut will be dry and have some brown shreds and some white shreds like this picture:

Toss it on top of any sweet concoction, like ice cream, fruit, yogurt, or Strawberry-Lime Shortcakes with Coconut Cream.
