January 2011

They keep saying that in 2011 “Pie is the new cupcake.”  We’ll have to see about that, but for now I’ll add to the hype.  Valentines day is just around the corner and if you need something that is 100% guaranteed to put a smile on someone’s face- I have it right here!  These little sweetie pies are genuinely adorable.  They’re also one of those things that look like tons of work and effort, but in reality they’re pretty quick …

Has this week been painfully long for anyone else? Who is so glad it’s Friday?! I’m trying to rest up (and trying desperately to get some nagging zits to go away) because Sara and I are headed to Utah to start working on some publicity for our book. Those of you who are in Utah, be sure to tune into Studio 5 on Wednesday if you want to see us cooking some of our favorite recipes in the book! Well, …

Southwest Stuffed Bell Peppers

We get loads of requests for meatless meals.  Both from those avoiding meat for dietary reasons, and more commonly for those trying to incorporate meatless meals for budget purposes.  I’m not gonna lie- I like meat.  A lot.  Which is why it takes a really great meatless meal to make me happy and this one fits the bill.  (There’s also an awesome veggie-packed meatless taquito recipe in our cook book.  One of my faves!) Start with bright, sweet peppers.  You …

So I’m sure lots of you are familiar with that apple butter pork loin recipe–it seems like it is one of those recipes like funeral potatoes (cheesy hashbrown casserole, if you’re not familiar with the lingo) that everyone has and no one knows where it came from. I’ll be honest. I want to like it so badly. It sounds so yummy. But I can’t handle that much one-note sweetness with meat. Awhile back, Sara and I were accidentally shipped some …

Can anything that hangs on a ribbon or string be called a bunting?  It seems as though the term is used quite liberally in crafting circles, so I say yes (ooh- garland!  Thanks for reminding me of that word in the comments that I couldn’t think of at 11pm when I wrote this! lol) Sometimes holiday decorating can be overwhelming.  In magazines (and some blogs.  Not this blog.  But some blogs.) you see people who switch out every detail of …

I have an obsession with wreaths lately.  I think it’s because they’re generally a doable project for me.  See, I’m sort of short-term crafter.  I like projects that I can look at, say “hey that’s cute”, go out and buy some stuff, and have it made and displayed the next day.  Any more than that and my projects just don’t get finished.  I also like projects I can do while watching tv with my hubby after the kids are in …

One of my most favorite meals in the whole world is a grilled steak (like a really really great steak) topped high with a pile of sweet caramelized onions.  Oh I’m thinking about it now, at 11pm, wishing I had one in front of me.  I have issues.  I should go get in bed, not eat steak. Onions, especially the “sweet” varieties are full of natural sugars.  Cooking them slowly over an extended period of time draws out those sugars …

If there’s one thing I have a hard time with when I’m doing meal-planning, it’s side dishes. I mean, yeah, I can throw together a mean salad to bring to a party, but I’m talking side dishes for dinner every night. This has gotten infinitely harder since I started Weight Watchers because the only “vegetables” my husband will willingly eat are potatoes and corn, which also suck up a whole bunch of my points and those are my ice cream …
