Ingredients

Sweet Pastry

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter chilled from the fridge
  • 1 egg beaten

Apple Filling

  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples 3-5 apples

Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk whole milk if you have it, otherwise anything will do
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉. Line a 9x13 baking dish with parchment, or spray with non-stick spray.
  • To prepare crust, mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl.
Cut in cold butter with a pastry blender or two knives until you have pea-sized crumbles. OR use my favorite method, grate it with a cheese grater and use your hands to crumble together.
  • Gently mix in beaten egg a little at a time while mixing with a fork to distribute.
  • Set aside about 1 ½ cups of your crumble topping (it should be about 1/3 of your total mixture) and then pour the rest into your baking dish and gently pat into dish.
  • To prepare apple filling, combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon and toss with apples.
  • Spread apples out on prepared crust. Sprinkle reserved crust mixture over apples evenly and bake in preheated oven for about 35-45 minutes. the top should be lightly golden brown and set.
  • When finished, allow to cool completely.
  • Tip for Glaze: If you'd like a light drizzle, you can cut the glaze in half, which I sometimes do. The full batch may give you more than you need, so just drizzle on to your liking!
  • To prepare glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, almond extract, and enough milk to achieve desired consistency for drizzling. Start slowly with the milk, you may not need all of it.
  • Place glaze in a Ziploc bag and cut off a very small portion of one of the corners (or just use a fork) to drizzle glaze over cooled pastry and allow to harden (you can place it in the freezer to hurry things along). Cut into bars and serve.
  • These can be served as handheld bars OR cut into larger squares and served on a plate with a fork, or warm with ice cream!
