So right before Christmas, I ran into Ulta to get my eyebrows waxed and left with dry shampoo, face oil, moisturizer, lip balm, a lip crayon, and about 42 samples, none of which were things I needed or actually went in for. Yes, I do realize that makes me sound like a privileged first-world brat. Just being honest with a little bit of hyperbole (just pre-emptively warding off comments about how I’m kind of a jerk. Let’s face it, I am kind of a jerk sometimes.) While I was waiting in line with my arms loaded up with stuff (because when I walked in, why in the world would I need something to carry my stuff in??), I was examining what else I could throw into my cupboards and forget about when I got home and saw lip exfoliant. Which is where I realized I needed to draw the line.
If I’m going to scrub the dead skin off my lips, it’s gonna have to taste good. And if it tastes good, it’s probably not going to be sitting in a tube for a long time in a department store for makeup. Also, there’s no way in this magnificent universe that anything in a tube that small that also tastes good is also worth $18. Now…I’m not really one of those people that’s like, “Oooh, I’m going to make all my own beauty products,” but when it comes to something this cheap and effective and easy, it’s totally worth it.
This was so fun that I actually made it with my daughter on Facebook Live this past weekend–if you want to check it out, you can watch it below!
You’re going to need some coconut oil, some grapefruit zest, sugar (raw or coarse sugar if you can find it), and a drop of peppermint essential oil (optional, but I love it.)
This is super easy–just mix the ingredients in a small air-tight container (I deliberately used very small quantities because it will go bad pretty quickly due to the grapefruit rind).
To use, scrub over lips and gently wipe off. You can also use this on your hands, feet, and/or face if you’d like! Use within about 1 week.

This looks fabulous! I also just use my toothbrush from time to time to get the dead chapped skin off my lips. Easy and Free!
I love making my own beauty products like this!

Great timing! I was about to order some – I have very chapped lips, I really need this stuff. I can’t wait to try it.
To use: scrub over lips and gently lick off.
And I’d be taking it personally if you went into Ulta and DIDN’T come out with a storage bin full of stuff. 😀
Love this! However, just a word of caution, that coconut oil scrubs used on the whole face may cause some people to break out like crazy (but it makes your skin so super soft!). I unfortunately speak from experience… 🙁
