Peppermint Old-Fashioned Chocolate Soda

Jump to Recipe

Have you guys ever had an egg cream? It’s kind of a funny thing because it’s basically a chocolate soda that doesn’t have eggs OR cream in it. Chocolate syrup, milk, and soda water are whisked together, and voila! It’s delicious.

I’m not calling this an egg cream because people feel VERY strongly about their regional foods (this one hails from Brooklyn), so I’m just calling this a peppermint chocolate soda. But it’s pretty much an egg cream.

Ingredient Notes

  • Soda Water – You can use very cold club soda, seltzer, or sparkling water.
  • Peppermint Syrup – I like Torani. You can find flavored syrups at World Market, Amazon, US Foods CHEF’STORE (used to be Cash & Carry), or your favorite coffee shop.
  • Chocolate Syrup – I used Torani dark chocolate syrup from my grocery store, but any chocolate syrup will work.
  • Milk – Whole milk is best here.

How to Make and Old Fashioned Chocolate Peppermint Soda

  1. In a 16 ounce glass, add a few pumps of peppermint syrup, some chocolate syrup, and a little bit of whole milk.
  1. With a long-handled spoon or whisk, whisk it together vigorously. While stirring, add some very cold soda water to fill up the glass, whisking to combine (there will be a lot of froth on top). Serve immediately.

This makes one serving, just for you. This would also be a really fun recipe to do at a party or gathering. Just set all the ingredients out on the counter and let people make their own. You could display the instructions for easy mixing!

FAQs

  • Can I make these ahead of time? Since these require very cold milk and soda water, and you want to retain the carbonation, these chocolate sodas are best made when you are ready to serve.
  • How do I make lots of these sodas at once? Line up your serving glasses and measure each ingredient into each glass. Although I have not tried it, you could mix the peppermint syrup, chocolate syrup, and milk for your chosen quantity in a pitcher or measuring cup and then divide it among your glasses before mixing in the soda water.
