How To: Fry Corn Tortilla Strips

Ever wondered how to get those crispy, salty strips of fried crunchiness that they give you at your favorite Mexican restaurant? Look no further! It’s your lucky day – I’m going to show you how to fry corn tortilla strips!

All you need are some corn tortillas (it doesn’t matter if they’re white or yellow corn. Just don’t use flour tortillas), oil for frying, some salt, and preferably, a pizza cutter. This is not the first time you’ll hear me talk about using my pizza cutter for something other than cutting pizza. I’m a deviant, I’ll admit it.

In a pan or skillet, heat about a 1/4 inch of vegetable oil (I use canola) to medium heat. Using your pizza cutter, cut the tortillas into thin strips.

Test your oil by flicking a bit of water into it. If it sizzles, it’s ready. If it splatters, it’s too hot–turn down the heat and try again in a few minutes. When the oil is ready, toss your tortilla strips into the hot oil and stir them around on a regular basis so they don’t burn.

When they start getting golden and crispy, remove them to a paper towel to drain and sprinkle with salt.

  5. I like to bake these in the oven and they turn out great (without the mess of the frying pan!) Slice them up like you said, spray them with Pam (or brush with oil), spread them out on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees. Sometimes I sprinkle them lightly with salt before baking! 🙂

  7. oooo-this looks yummy. i just tried my hand at homemade taquitos the other day and we’ve got a bunch of corn tortillas leftover. now i know what else i can do with them! can’t wait to try. (oh, and we’ve got a bunch of spinach too, so this should add some pizazz to our salads!)
